BO McCALEBB INJURED IN EUROPEAN LEAGUE ACTION

Bo McCalebb suffered an ankle injury Thursday evening in the second half of a European League tournament game.  At the time of his injury he was leading all scorers with 17 points.  Reports were that he was carried off the floor by his teammates.  The PG is still trying to get an update regarding his prognosis.  Hopefully is was a bad sprain - nothing broken.

As soon as some information comes our way, we will give you the scoop.  In the meantime, get ready for details of our 2nd Annual thepointguard.net Fantasy Basketball League, coming real soon.

THE PG ON BO McCALEBB, RAMON SESSIONS AND SMUSH PARKER

This audio for this video was excerpted from the 10/13/2012, Episode 38 broadcast of THE POINT GUARD Radio Program.  The PG reminds us about Bo McCalebb, "Europe's Best Point Guard" and alerts us of Ramon Session's prospects for starting at the point for the Charlotte Bobcats.  Finally, there is a mention of Smush Parker who, apparently, did not have the best relationship with Kobe Bryant.  The music is "Piano Beat" courtesy of GCP OnDaTrack (copyright 2012).

WHY SESSIONS LEFT LAKERS

Our man Ramon Sessions has finally discussed why he would leave the Los Angeles Lakers to ink a two-year deal with the Charlotte Bobcats.  He speaks to Marc Spears of YAHOO Sports in this article.

It's good to hear that Sessions will be starting in Charlotte.  The PG was concerned that the Bobcats' commitment to last year's first round draft choice, Kemba Walker, would relegate our guy once again to a backup role.  According to Spears' article, new Charlotte Coach Mike Dunlap says Sessions will be counted on to lead this season.

The PG apologizes to those who were expecting him to elaborate on the previous post regarding the Lakers moving to the Princeton Offense.  After catching the game featuring Bo McCalebb late Friday evening, The PG felt that it was important that the audience of THE POINT GUARD Radio Program hear about this outstanding, yet unknown individual.  The PG DID NOT expect that he would rave for a full half-hour!

LAKERS GOING TO PRINCETON OFFENSE

The Lakers and Coach Mike Brown are changing to the Princeton Offense created by Pete Carrill.  They hired Eddie Jordan who employed the offense with the Washington Wizards and he learned the system from Carrill when they were both assistants at Sacramento.  This will be the Lakers' third offense installation in three years.

Steve Nash can run any offense, but The PG thinks as the season progresses, the rest of the league may breathe a sigh of relief.  Anything that takes the ball out of Nash's hands and lessens his opportunities to run the pick-and-roll with Gasol while compelling rotating defenders to actually LEAVE Kobe Bryant alone, sounds like a blessing to me if I'm an opposing coach.   I know the Wizards had much success running this with Gilbert Arenas at the point.  But Arenas, as great as he was, still was a different type of player than Nash.  Arenas could really score but Nash will not be the team's leading scorer.  The team's leading scorer will obviously be Kobe no matter what you run.  So why run a Princeton motion offense and unnecessarily take the ball out of Nash's hands?

Washington had three main scorers who could all put the ball on the floor, Arenas, Jamison and Butler.  Whatever motion the Wizards ran, one of those 3 guys was going to get the shot  - and usually ended up putting the ball on the floor to get that shot.  Nash's primary benefit for a team is that he enables ball players who don't put the ball on the floor well to get wide open shots (read:  Howard, Gasol, and World Peace) off his masterful use of the pick-and-roll.  I don't see a motion offense making better scorers of these three.  And by going with it, much like with the triangle, you de-emphasize the ability of the point guard to put perimeter dribble pressure on the defense.  But isn't putting perimeter dribble penetration pressure on the defense precisely why you would want a Steve Nash?  A Chris Paul?  A Deron Williams?

Like I said, Nash can run any kind of offense.  But there is such a thing as highest and best use.  I don't see that principle being served in the decision to run the Princeton Offense with this Laker team.

Here's a link to an article in YAHOO Sports regarding the decision

THE PG on TY LAWSON'S ASSERTION that NUGGETS ARE BEST IN WEST

Ty Lawson declares that the Nuggets are the best team in the Western Conference.  Of course, I don't agree with him.  But there is no denying that the Nuggets are going to be a formidable contender.  They have upgraded their defense, transition ability, and athleticism; three areas that weren't weak spots with them last year.  They probably do have the most talented roster 1 through 12 in the West.  JaVale McGee spent the summer training with Hakeem Olajuwon who simply raves about him.  Andre Iguodala does not have to carry the scoring load; he's free to do the multiplicity of things he does very well and will also provide veteran     leadership for this deep, talented and young team.

FORGOTTEN LAKER DYNASTY LEGEND:NORM NIXON

Forgotten Laker Dynasty Legend: Norm Nixon

Nixon was my favorite Lakers player during the early years of their 80's dynasty.  The Lakers of Nixon's tenure (with Jamal Wilkes, Bob McAdoo, and Michael Cooper and a young, fast Magic Johnson) were like pure-bred greyhounds in transition. It was this team for which the moniker "Showtime" originated.  The Lakers after the Norm Nixon for Byron Scott trade (and with the drafting of James Worthy) became more half-court-oriented offensively and defensively, even though they would still run opportunistically with Magic in transition.  The Lakers of Norm Nixon NEEDED a fast tempo in order to win.  That made for some pretty exciting end-to-end action.  Nobody flowed  better than the Norm Nixon-era Lakers.

The PG agrees with the author of this linked article that Nixon should be considered for the Hall of Fame and DEFINITELY should have his jersey hanging from the rafters.  Nixon was easily among the top three Speed Point Guards (according to E. Pierce's 3 Styles of Point Guard Theory) that ever played the game at the NBA level.

As a matter-of-fact, we have overlooked the Magic Johnson/Norm Nixon backcourt in our ongoing consideration of the great NBA Guard Tandems.  I think we should rectify this situation on tonight's THE POINT GUARD Radio Program.

THE PG ANNOUNCES FIRST PRE-SEASON RANKING OF THE TOP 20 NBA PGs

On Episode 31 of THE POINT GUARD Internet Radio Program, The PG announced his Pre-Season Rankings of the NBAs top 20 point guards.  He cautions that this is not the final pre-season listing; it will be amended as circumstances dictate up to the final THE POINT GUARD show before the start of the NBA season (to accommodate circumstances such as trades, injuries, etc.).  ThePG insists that this ranking is calculated more as a prediction of performance this coming season, rather than as an indication of past seasons' efforts.

Among the names on last year's Pre-Season list which do not appear on this summer's initial list are:  D-Rose, Devin Harris, Chauncey Billups, Jason Kidd, and Baron Davis.  With the exception of D-Rose, who is expected to miss most of the year after ACL surgery, these omissions do represent a true "changing of the (point) guard" on the NBA landscape.

1.   Chris Paul
1a  Deron Williams
3.   Rajon Rondo
4.   Russell Westbrook
5.   Steve Nash
6.   Tony Parker
7.   Kyrie Irving
8.   Brandon Jennings
9.   Damien Lilliard
10  Darren Collison
11  Jrue Holliday
12  Ty Lawson
13  Rick Rubio
14  George Hill
15  Goran Drajic
16  Kyle Lowry
17  Mike Conley
18  Stephen Curry
19  Jeremy Lin
20  Raymond Felton

This list will be amended on an on-going basis until the Saturday before the season begins.  Feel free to comment at any time.

THE PG CORRECTLY PREDICTS CHANGES BROUGHT IN BY MARK JACKSON AT GOLDEN STATE

The PG calls another one!

As I posted the previous entry, I ran across this excerpt from an episode of THE POINT GUARD Internet Radio Program (on BLOGTALKRADIO) which aired weeks before the start of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.  In this episode, Speedy asks The PG what he thought of the (at that time) recent hiring of Mark Jackson to replace Keith Smart as coach of the Golden State Warriors.  The PG's response was ultimately determined to be right on the money, including the forecasting of the moving of Monta Ellis, the insertion of a big off-guard (Klay Thompson) into the lineup and an attempt to bring in a low post presence (which turned out to be Andrew Bogut).  The PG predicted the end of Golden State's entertaining brand of high-scoring basketball as Mark Jackson turns the team to a more traditional style of play.  Lastly, ThePG correctly predicted that these changes would make the Warriors a better team - just not as much fun to watch.

According to YAHOO Sports, Stephen Curry should be 100% totally rehabbed from his ankle injury by the first game of the season on October 31st.  Since Monta Ellis has been moved to Milwaukee (and sense the Warriors are finally starting a big guard at the shooting guard position) The PG figures he will finally get a chance to ascertain to which of the 3 Style of Point Guard Curry belongs.

LINSANITY LEAVES FOR GREENER PASTURES

Chris Broussard of ESPN tries to explain the behind-the-scene dynamics resulting in the New York Knicks' refusal to match the Houston Rockets' $29 million offer sheet for Jeremy Lin.

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8176327

The PG feels this is best for all parties involved.  Houston gets their media personality to put fans in the seats (and get merchandise off the shelves), Lin gets paid BIG TIME and gets to play in an open-style offense not available to him in NYC, and the Knicks save cap space that could have gone to an overpaid back-up coming off knee surgery, had Lin failed to flourish in the half-court offensive style favored by Coach Woodson who wants Stoudamire and Anthony to be the hub of the offense.

I think the Knicks always suspected there was a chance they might lose Lin; because if they really wanted to keep him, why would they let him "test the market" and risk ballooning of the signing price?  The Rockets are building for the future, so the Lin acquisition will help their marketability until they are once again able to put a contending team on the floor.  Everybody wins, except for New Yorkers more attached to the Linsanity hype than the New York Knicks' prospects for this season.

Personally, if I were the Knicks, I would have gone after Ramon Sessions or Darren Collison rather than Raymond Felton (a control pg) - particularly if they were going to bring in J. Kidd for tutelage purposes.  Either Sessions or Collison would have provided more quickness and off-the-dribble elusiveness than Felton. Understandably, however, New York chose to go with the more familiar option.

Of course, what the Knicks REALLY should have done was get D'antoni a speed or pure penetration point guard to run his system two years ago, BEFORE the trade for Melo.

The PG Calls Another One!!

In Episode 19 (see previous post) of THE POINT GUARD Internet Radio Program, The PG states that Jamal Crawford should be placed at the point guard spot, replacing an injured and struggling Raymond Felton.  (Of course, The PG and Speedy have been adamant for some time that Crawford should actually play the point rather than the Two.)  This past week, Portland coach, Nate McMillan, finally began to see The PG's reasoning. He made the switch and as YAHOO Sports reports:
G Jamal Crawford started at the point for the second time this season -- and for the first time in place of a healthy Raymond Felton. McMillan made the decision to make a change after the Laker game, and it paid off splendidly with both players. The pair combined to hit 7-of-8 three-pointers in the first quarter, the one miss a desperation shot by Felton as the shot clock expired. Crawford enjoyed his best performance of the season, with 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting -- 5-for-7 from three-point range -- to go with eight assists, four rebounds and one turnover in 30 minutes. "It was a lot of fun," Crawford said. "It was good to get off to a fast start -- just like the Lakers did to us last night. One thing about starting, I don't feel like I have to rush. I can take my time and set the table for the other guys. (Tuesday), the ball found its way back to me."
